| 3 or 5 Series? Most comparisons here are between the E46 3-Series and the E39 5-Series Touring estates. For details of these, and earlier and later models, please see our 3-Series Timeline and 5-Series Timeline pages The main difference between the 3-Series and 5-Series Touring models is size. The E39 Touring is 328mm (13") longer and 61mm (2.4") wider than an E46. Both have 4/5 seats, split and folding rear seats, split tailgates with opening glass and retractable load area covers. The load area on an E39 Touring is considerably wider and deeper than that of an E46 and it has about twice the carrying capacity Both Series are available with four and six cylinder engines, and manual or automatic transmissions, and both drive extremely well. The steering on a 3-Series is somewhat lighter than a 5-Series, and the car feels more compact, making it an attractive compact family estate. The bigger 5-Series Touring has self-levelling rear air suspension which makes it a more accomplished load-carrier with a bigger capacity If you are looking for a seven-seater estate, or for greater carrying capacity than that offered by a 5-Series, please see our W124 website for the legendary Mercedes W124 estate car | ||
